Sanrevelle’s debut collection ‘Les Indiennes’ is a tribute to the bright, printed fabrics produced in Europe from the 17th century by the same name.
Originally imported from India by the Portuguese and Dutch, these fabrics gained popularity in France with manufacturers replicating the vibrant and detailed patterns made famous by the traditional Indian technique of block printing.
These designs, originally stamped onto cotton using carved wooden blocks, combined the whimsy and spirit of European design with the hand block technique of an ancient Indian aesthetic. Ultimately becoming particularly popular in the South of France, they were a mirror to the vibrant and sun-soaked aesthetic of the French Mediterranean - light, airy fabrics perfect for the clothing required in this warm climate, rich with natural beauty.
